Five Methods To Declutter Your Home

Facebook organize.jpg

Spring usually marks new beginnings so why not declutter and organize your home, whether it's in an effort to downsize or simply to declutter your home. Here are some simple tips and tricks.

Tackle one room at a time

Start small, don’t start ,,wreaking havoc,, on all your rooms, just start for example with the kitchen. If you start turning the whole house upside down it will surely give you more anxiety that everything needs to be solved.

Take the 12-12-12 challenge

While decluttering select 12 items to throw away, 12 to donate and 12 to keep. This method is an easy way to sort through all the small items in your home.

Use the Four-box method

In the same fashion as the last trick, label 4 boxes : one for things to throw away - this is appropriate for anything that is malfunctioning or expired, one box for things to give away - these are things that you can donate, which can help with sustainability. The third box is for things that you should keep, specifically in the space that they are already in and the fourth box is for things that you will relocate, things that should be in a different place. It is important to use this method for all the rooms that you will tackle, because at the end you will see how many items needed to be put through this process.

Follow the Rule of Three

We all love our open shelf space, but the rule of three keeps you from cluttering your shelves. For any open space shelving limit non-book items to maximum 3. This will make your shelves look great and clutter will be prevented.

Apply the 80/20 rule

This rule stipulates that you only use 20% of your things for 80% of the time. The goal is to find those 80% of your possessions that you do not use. This can work well for clothes as well as electronics, toys or any other things that occupy your space.
